While it may have been a recent development in America, bingo lottery has its roots set in Europe as early as in the 1500s. The modern day bingo has evolved from the Italian national lottery known as “Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia” held in 1530 which is popular even today. In the 1700s the French too introduced a version of the game and named it “Le Lotto”. Similar to the bingo played today, the French version had nine vertical rows containing 1 to 10 in the first, 11 to 20 in the next and so on. It also had three horizontal rows with numbers in five and squares while the rest were kept blank. The caller dived into a bag and drew chips that were numbered. The players covered the numbers that were called out and the one who finished the horizontal row first was declared the winner of the Lotto.

By 1800s the game had caught the fancy of some educationalists of Germany who used the game to teach multiplication tables, spelling, animals and historical facts to children. However the modern version of the game was designed by Edwin Lowe. A toy salesman he first saw the potential of the game at a country carnival in 1929 where he observed a version of Lotto known as Beano being played. He watched the wooden disks pulled out from the bag and the players covering the corresponding number of the disk with a bean on their card. The winner who crossed out all shouted Beano and was handed a prize. Back home Lowe designed his own game and named it Bingo after an accidental mispronunciation of the original word “Beano” by an excited little girl. The game became a hit and by 1934 more than ten thousand of such games were played across the country.
